Perito Moreno Glacier Trek (El Calafate, Argentina)

“When you put your hand in a flowing stream, you touch the last that has gone before and the first of what is still to come.” – Leonardo da Vinci, Artist, Mathematician and Scientist

We said goodbye to Chile and hello to Argentina as a bus took us north. This particular bus took issue with the grade of the road halfway through our journey, so we spent an hour on the side of the road in the vast openness of Patagonia while the bus driver wrestled with the engine. After patching it up with some help from another driver, we made it safely to El Calafate.

The next day we headed to the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina’s Glacier National Park, the only glacier in the whole Southern Patagonia ice field that’s actually growing at the same speed it’s melting. Our guide gave us a crash course in walking on ice, then we strapped on our crampons to get up close and personal with the glacier.

A spectacular view of the front of the glacier and the ice sheet behind it. The ice takes 400 years from the time it falls as snow to reach the front.

Crampons are kind of fun!

Having some whiskey on the rocks after our hike. The ice used was straight from the glacier, yum!

Water break. A refreshing drink of water straight from the glacial melt.

Listening to the glacier crack and water rush as we look for calving. We did see a few breaks from the glacier on this warm and sunny day!
